Cedar Rapids has long been a community that values global connections, and recent events have further solidified this commitment. By embracing international themes, the city continues to foster initiatives that celebrate diversity and innovation.
Diplomacy Begins Here: Space for Innovation
In October 2025, Global Ties Iowa, in partnership with Global Ties U.S. and the U.S. Department of State, hosted the ‘Diplomacy Begins Here: Space for Innovation’ summit in Iowa City. This event explored entrepreneurship in science and technology, focusing on economic development strategies, space exploration, and the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. Such discussions are vital as they position our region at the forefront of global innovation.
AsianFest Celebrates Cultural Heritage
September 2025 marked the 11th Annual AsianFest at NewBo City Market. This free event celebrated the rich cultures and heritage of Asian communities across Eastern Iowa. Notably, the festival honored the 50th anniversary of Southeast Asian refugee resettlement in Iowa, including the Tai Dam community, who found their first American home here. Events like these not only celebrate cultural diversity but also strengthen community bonds.
Global Graze: A Culinary Fusion
In September 2025, the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation introduced ‘Global Graze,’ an event that fused international flavors with local produce. Held on the rooftop of the Cedar Rapids Public Library, attendees enjoyed globally inspired street food crafted by local chefs in collaboration with area farmers. Proceeds benefited Feed Iowa First’s Equitable Land Access Program, supporting local farmers and promoting food equity.
These events underscore Cedar Rapids’ dedication to embracing global perspectives and integrating them into local initiatives. By doing so, the city not only enriches its cultural landscape but also fosters a more inclusive and innovative community.
